Sorrento From Sorrento to Bari
Posted: Tue June 19, 2007 01:02 PM UTC
Hello, everyone!
I need to get from the Amalfi Coast to Bari either by bus or train. I have checked the internet sites of trenitalia and sitta bus but with no success. Can any of you help me?
Thanks!

Your problem with the train is probably because much of the Amalfi Coast has no rail service. If you are in Amalfi itself, for example, you will end up taking a SITA bus to someplace like Salerno, which does have a rail station.

You will then discover the next problem - that rail service across the country (as opposed to up and down) is not nearly so convenient. For example, there are no direct trains from Salerno to Bari; you will have to change at one or more of a variety of places. This is true, even if you go up to Naples, although the cross country train trip will be faster from Naples, it seems.

It looks like the faster connections will go through Caserta.

In any case, look at the SITA website to find buses that get you to whatever nearby large towns what have rail stations (preferably Trenitalia, as the Circumvesuviana also runs around here), then catch the train.

Note that there is another website called www.italybus.it, that provides schedules of buses that cross regional boundaries. In this case, you might try to look for buses that go from major towns in the Amalfi area to Bari (note: site is totally in Italian)...

Thank you, Bill! I had a misconception about trains/buses there, thinking it would be the best bet. I did try the Sitta website but if memory doesn't fail me the Naples-Bari route was not found.
If you don't mind me asking another question, since trains and buses are not so frequent in the Amalfi coast, how can one get around from sorrento, positano, salerno, etc.?

On the north side of the Amalfi peninsula (i.e., the Naples side), people often take the Circumvesuviana train, a private railroad that runs between Naples, Herculaneum, Pompeii, Sorrento, and several other places. If you were in Sorrento, you would take it up to Naples, where the Circumvesuviana station is downstairs from the Trenitalia one, so the connection is not difficult.

On the rest of the peninsula, you take buses, which can be OK or slow, depending...there are direct buses from places like Amalfi (as I recall) and the train station in Naples - not many a day, but such a connection might be better than taking the bus to Salerno...
