| Salerno | TRAVELING FROM SALERNO TO ROME? Posted: Mon June 18, 2007 03:34 PM UTC
We are actually staying in Massa Lubrense and doing a day trip to Capri. When returning to the Fiumcino airport in Rome...I see one way is to take a taxi or a bus from Massa Lubrense 2 miles from Sorrento and leave from Salerno on Rail Europe to the train station Rome Termini then get on the Leonardo Express train to the Fiumcino airport in Rome.
Would anyone recommend a more efficient route? I realize I can also travel from Sorrento to Naples and Naples to Rome using the Circumvesuviana and the train from Naples to Rome. Just concerned about the number of connections. |

Click on the items: 1. Rete e orari. 2. Ferrovia. 3. Linea Napoli (Naples) - Sorrento. 4. Sorrento at Circumvesuviana´s website http://www.vesuviana.it/
Get off at NAPOLI GARIBALDI - STAZIONE CENTRALE. When you leave there take you the train to Rome with Trenitalia (Italian railways). Trenitalia´s website: http://www.trenitalia.com/en/index.html Jesper

Well, Massa Lubrense is 6.5 kilometers (by road) from Sorrento and its Circumvesuviana station...while Salerno is 62 kilometers (by road) away...a taxi to Salerno would be quite pricey, and I am not sure you could take a single bus all the way from Massa Lubrense to Salerno anyway (a change in Amalfi at least), so you would either spend a fortune or have changes anyway.
No, you already know the simple way - go to Sorrento, take the Circumvesuviana, in Naples at Piazza Garibaldi, just go upstairs to the Trenitalia station and take the Trenitalia train (not "RailEurope", which is a travel agency website) up to Rome, then take the Leonardo Express over to FCO. A vague alternative would be to take the Marrozzi bus from Sorrento to Stazione Tiburtina on the east side of Rome, then take the FM1 (local train) across Rome over to the airport...but my recollection is that they have only 2 buses a day, which probabaly won't suit you... The route via Salerno would be bus, train, train as opposed to train, train, train, so hardly better in terms of number of connections, but if you look at the train timetable for Salerno to Rome, you will see that you may well have to change at Napoli Centrale anyway, depending on time of departure. So, the Circumvesuviana route would be the more direct. As Bill has said, even if you buy a train ticket from Rail Europe (which I would not recommend: wait and buy it in Italy from Italian Railways), you will not be travelling on Rail Europe as this company doesn't run any trains!
Apart from returning to Naples direct from Capri, the only more efficient route I can suggest would be by private airport shuttle or taxi, especially if "we" are more than 2. You could ask your hotel for contacts or get a few quotes from the companies listed on http://www.sorrentotour.it/accommodations/hotels2.html.

My friends were able to pickup a Marozzi bus at Rome's Termini station directly to Sorrento. Be sure to get your tickets before hand as they don't add another bus after the first one fills. Think about doing Ischia over Capri; just as nice and not as crowded. Beautiful ... enjoy.
PS: Train is possible from Sorrento to Rome via Naples. Switch trains in Naples.

ProfBob, are you sure they picked up the Marozzi bus at Termini? The Marozzi website clearly states "Tiburtina"...I suppose they might stop by Termini on the way, but I would have supposed that they would have headed the opposite direction for the ringroad...

I'm afraid I can't help with your query but I wondered how much you know about Massa Lubrense. I want to stay in the Sorrento area but not necessarily Sorrento. Do you know how easy it is to travel from Massa Lubrense to surrounding places or into Sorrento where I believe you can get a ferry or boat to visit nearby places Many thanks
