I think train is usually cheaper than bus. If you're really foolhardy you could bite the bullet and even take hard seat all the way, but I wouldn't recommend that!
For trains you'll need to change trains at Guangzhou. Haikou -- Guangzhou: K408 (0359--1456) 10h57min K512 (2042--0841) 11h59min T202 (2253--0932) 10h39min Guangzhou -- Nanning: K364/K365 (1413--0222) 12h09min 2571/2574 (1710--0547) 12h37min Guangzhou East -- Nanning: K230/K231 (0731--1932) 12h01min
