There is nothing much in Jammu and it is a small town in way to Sri Nagar. You can stay for three days in Sri Nagar, staying in Shikara is relaxing is peaceful.By booking your stay in shikara(House boat)through govt.aproved agent I see no problem for four female trevalers.I just see off VT member ines2003 for Sri Nagar after having a breif VT meet. She booked the house boat through Govt.Aproved agnet.Kashmir tourism buses goes every day from Delhi to SriNagar. You can go by air in order to save time.
Best wishes

Since you have only 3days at your disposal, these are the comments:

Leh: Leh is one of the beautiful places and you need atleast one week there.
You need to fly from Hyderabad-Delhi to Leh..and time is not enough for you even to acclamitise in Leh as you have to return immediately. So Leh is out of question.

Srinagar: You can spend 3days in Srinagar and can see most of the things. Stay in one of the hotels in Dalgate area or in one of the shikaras. Take a hired car and visit all the baghs(parks).Third day you can see rest of the city.I spent just two days in Srinagar and seen most of the city.
So Srinagar is your best bet.

Jammu: I preferred Srinagar to Jammu as i felt there is not much to visit. So cannot comment on Jammu.

It is perfectly ok to go around in Srinagar on your own.Kashmiri people are helpful and courteous.

Have a nice time.

I went to Kashmir two years ago. I was an American woman alone. I stayed on the Chicago Houseboats. (email chicagodallake@hotmail.com) The owner was a man named Ajaz Khar. I spent six weeks on the houseboat, and also went camping in the mountains, rode horseback, went on boat trips to the north, and on excursions. It was the most wonderful time I have had anywhere. I encourage you to do it. The family that owned the houseboat took care of me, and arranged everything. The houseboat was clean, well maintained, and the food was fantastic. Plus, I loved the beauty of the valley and mountains. The people are great.

State of Jammu and Kashmir Regarding your trip to Kashmir

Hi
Just wondering how your trip was to Kashmir, especially the safety of women travelling in small groups or alone.
I'll be going to Srinigar in September and although I'll be hosted by a friend, I'd like to find out from a single asian woman's perspective how it was.

Did you stay on the houseboat....did you feel safe on it?

Appreciate any advice you may have on the trip.
Thanks
A

I am a woman along who travelled to Kashmir. See my comments above. I felt very safe, but much of that feeling was due to the wonderful family that owned the houseboat on which I stayed. They took care of me and looked out for my safety. They arranged hikes and excursions with people in the mountains whom they knew for a long time...so I was well looked after. I stayed on the Chicago Houseboats. The owner was Ajaz Khar. Not only did I value the quality of the houseboat, I appreciated the concern for my well-being and comfort, as well as the effort to show me the sites. Go to Srinagar! You will love it.

Hey, thanks for the encouraging words. I'm very excited about the visit; plus I'm sure I'll be well cared for by my friend.
Will let you know how it goes when I get back.
Thanks again.

Hi there. I just went to Srinagar about 2months ago, in early February and it was fantastic. And in Srinagar, the three of us stayed at a houseboat called Chicago Houseboat.

For a three days trip, I'm sure you can visit quite a lot of places especially the gardens (It was beautiful during winter, and the locals told us that it would be more beautiful if you come in July/August) Besides, you might get a chance to go to Philhagram and Gulmarg, which is also very wonderful places to be.

FYI, we stayed for 6 days in Chicago Houseboat and everything, from sightseeing, food and of course, your staying place are well arranged by the owner, whose name is Ajaz. And of coz, safety is our first concern. During our stay, i have nothing to worry about because there, in the houseboat where we were staying, the owner and his great workers took care of us very well. During our stay, there were also other tourists from French, Australia, Japan and Iraq staying staying there.

Hope that'll help.
