| Auckland | Auckland StopOver Posted: Fri June 15, 2007 12:04 PM UTC
Hi
I'm stopping over at Auckland next week - arriving Auckland Airport at 11am and departing at 7pm. I understand that it takes about an hour to get into the city from the airport so that leaves me about 5 hours to kill. Would someone kindly recommend what should I do and where should I go, bearing in mind my limited time and that it's now winter!!! Thanks so much :) |

I live in Auckland for many many years now. It only takes about 30 mins to Auckland City Centre from the Airport. I would suggest that you take a taxi although it's a little more costly than the shuttle but it saves you a lot of time. It's about NZD 50. I would suggest that you go to Sky Tower where you can view the whole of Auckland from the top. Go there for a little lunch instead of buying the ticket which alone costs you $25. There is a restaurant on the top of the tower. Stay for around 1 hour and continue walking around the city centre if you want to. You can take a LINK bus and have a brief tour of Auckland city. the whole trip takes abit more than 1 hour. Unfortunately, Auckland doesn't have a rail system to make going around easier if you are not driving otherwise I'd suggest that you go to One Tree Hill and Mission Bay. For more information about the public transport go to www.maxx.co.nz

Kia ora
A visit to the Auckland War Memorial Museum could be worth considering. There they have a superb collection of Maori taonga (treasures) and there is a short cultural performance 3 times daily : you might catch the 1.30 performance. I think it is $25 per person. Check their website for more info: www.aucklandmuseum.com

Those two ideas are great. From the sky tower, you can just walk around heading towards the bay and there are a lot of interesting things to do.
