Chilko Lake Vacation time in the Chilcotin
Posted: Fri June 15, 2007 11:01 AM UTC
Next week, I'm planning a fishing trip to Chilko Lake and the area surrounding.

What will the weather be like? Will I catch fish? What flies should I use? Will I get eaten by a bear? How are the roads? Are there any 5-Star hotels nearby?

Damn silly questions!!!!

All I know is...I'll have a fabulous time in the wilderness ;o))

Well.... lets hope that you don't get eaten by a bear or by black flies either! The roads - well they are how they are... and the 5-Star hotels... well I hope that you will see more than 5 Stars from your canvas "hotel". Te fish... I'm sure you'll catch 'em ... and then YOU get to clean 'em too! The weather will be as it is... just like the roads! Just for the heck of it - look up www.theweathernetwork.ca Or just look outside!
Have a great time... take lots of pictures and give us another one of your terrific pages, please.

bears usually run away from people, so you're off the hook there.

You have a problem. To not get eaten by bears you need to hike in a group of six or more. To catch any fish, the fewer people the better.

So its either fish and get eaten by a bear (dead fish is like bait to attract the bears to you) or just VT in the 5-Star hotel.

I've fished the lake-it's really only worth wile later in the day-early AM the fish are sluggish and overall I found better fishing in the river.

It's a cold place even in summer and you're much more likely to see Cows bashing through the brush than Bears.

I don't FF at all bait works much better second spinners and small spoons.

I hope Chilko Lake isn't in Romania...beware of late night sneak attacks.

BUCHAREST, Romania (AP) - A bear attacked a group of U.S. tourists on a remote trail in the Carpathian Mountains, killing a woman and injuring two other people, authorities said Sunday.

The group of six tourists chased off the bear when it tried to approach them near a cabin about 75 miles north of Bucharest, but the bear reappeared on a trail and attacked the group around 10 p.m. Saturday.

I just got back from the Chilcotin and Bella Coola late yesterday, which proves (so far) that the bears didn't get me. :o) I saw at least 5 bears on the way, including one with cubs. Also lots of eagles, moose, deer and a unique little critter at a campsite where I was fishing...an albino ground squirrel. (Pictures and all to come shortly)

As for the fishing, it was spectacular. Anyone wanna tackle-busting rainbow trout??? Try Cochin Lake in the Chilcotin, south of Tatla Lake whe there's a mayfly hatch. :o)))))

I caught and released more than 20 fish of all sizes ranging from about 8" to 24.5 inches long. The biggest was a 7 pounder from Lorin Lake caught on a black Hellgrammite nymph.

I took more than 430 photos as well including several big panoramas. I'll be going back there in the fall when the trees are ablaze with color. Any one wanna join me???? It's the trip of a lifetime and not too expensive either...around $550. Most of my expenses was gas for the 3160 km trip. Lots of the driving was on the back roads, far from any civilization.

As for the critter...the albino gopher (ground squirrel) was very tame and let me get within a couple of feet to capture him or her with the camera...I also tempted it with an oatmeal cookie and some peanuts. Amazing creature with its bright pink eyes.

I'm assuming that it is a certain fly or lure that attracts only specific fish in certain lakes at certain times of the day/season/year.

Of course, we breathe yellow air... that can't be good for us either. Perhaps that is what is causing this language/comprehension problem!
