York Yorkshire coast
Posted: Fri June 15, 2007 07:38 AM UTC
I've been to York lots of times and now want to see something of the Yorkshire coast other than Whitby, Scarborough, and Ron Hoods Bay.

I know there's bus service to Bridlington but wonder if there is another spot that might be better to visit. Any suggestions for the best way to get to the coast and the best seaside place to visit?

Thanks very much.

Oops, of course that was supposed to be "Robin" Hoods bay.

Staithes is a very picturesque old fishing village, quite tourist though.
To be honest Bridlington doesn't have a lot going for it.
There's Hornsea with the largest mere in England, lots and lots of birds and wildlife to see here, the town is small but it has a good local museum, a lovely beach, pebbly though, great fish and chips from Sullivans.
To get there might be a bit tricky, I know East Yorkshire bus company does go there though from Hull and I presume from other cities too.
Up the coast there's Marske, think that's how you spell it, which has a good pub at the bottom of the road, a car boot sale on sundays, some antiques fairs, quite a small beach but there's amazing cliff top walks, rows of Georgian town houses and a great park to walk around with a mini steam engine, a river and planted grdens with a tea house. It does have a train station though.
I'm sure I'll think of many more....
But good luck finding somewhere, there's so many small places to see and it's aroding away so quickly.

The best thing about Bridlington is the harbour and nearby Flamborough Head. The town is OK but nothing special although the old part of town ( which is a mile or so away from the centre) is worth a visit. You could take a boat tour from the harbour around Flamborough Head and then from the town take a 20 minute bus ride out to the village which is nice and see Flamborough Head from above it. You can easily get down to the beach too and explore caves at low tide.
There is a train service on the Hull to Scarborough line. Hornsea is a nice town ( see my VT page) and there are buses from Hull and Bridlington.
Saltburn is usually missed by visitors - its well north of Whitby but there is a train from Middlesborough. As Northeast80 said Staithes is good to visit.
When are you visiting?

I agree Brid isn't the most exciting place in Yorkshire - despite having family with a B&B there, apparently :) I'd go for Staithes or some other small place or stay inland on the moors - you know there's not ONE decent page on Thornton-le-Dale on VT for instance (or Colin, that's one for you!).

Again I'd go for a look at Staithes, Captain Cooks lodgings are by the harbour.
I would'nt describe it as touristy at all, more like an authentic fishing village which it still is of course.
Staithes should'nt keep you for more than a couple of hours tops. Then take the bus to Saltburn, with it's Victorian seaside architecture, attractive gardens, listed pier, and a peculiar tram railway which transports you from beach to clifftop.

I have a few photos I took last year on one of our many days out in Thornton le Dale - they are in my Scarborough pages in the off the track bit.
I am in Bridlington on Tuesday so as long as the weather is OK I will try and get down to the harbour and start a Bridlington page. Flamborough Head is well worth seeing and if Hornsea was in Devon or Cornwall it would be hailed as a great holiday destination. If you like shopping the Freeport there is the best in the north of England (in my opinion).

Thank you all for writing. I've been to Staithes, Saltburn, Redcar, and most of the seaside towns to the North (I live at present in Newcastle). What I was looking for was a scenic place south of Scarborough, an area I have not yet visited. Will keep all your comments in mind, though. Thanks again.

What about Filey? You could walk out on the brigg - that's interesting and its a good town too. There is a page on VT but I will try and do one this year.Other than Filey - Hornsea I would say. Avoid Withernsea - I normally give favourable reviews to everywhere but there are exceptions! You could go there on a Sunday and take the special bus to Spurn Point though - the spit of land that juts out in to the Humber ( have a look at a map).

Thanks again. Part of my original question was "how can I get there", although I can see I didn't phrase that part very well. I plan to take a train to York and then get to the coast from there, so I was wondering about the best way to go. Last time I was in York I noticed a bus stop for the route to Bridlington at the underpass near the train station. Is that the only bus there is? (I looked up train service, and it seems indirect, sending people to Hull first, for example.)

But sending people to Hull is not a bad idea when they want to visit the southern Yorkshire coast. The buses from there are more regular than the buses from York (at least when I lived in York). But there are still buses from York. Have a look here to see some alternatives:

filey and spurn point sound good to me... but remeber, hornsea IS the only place left in the world where global warming has not yet had any effect

The best way is to take a Scarborough train from York and then get off at Seamer and change to a Hull bound train that will stop at Filey and Bridlington.
Of course I don't want to discourage anyone from visiting Hull ( I live just outside it and work there)!

I have put up the start of a Bridlington page tonight with some photos I took today - unfortunately the weather was dull but I can easily retake them.
I think bus 744 goes from York to Bridlington.

Thanks again to all who replied. When the weather gets better (and we have some sun for a change) I may find an opportunity to head for the coast!
