Antigua Guatemala Shots reccommended?
Posted: Thu June 14, 2007 04:19 PM UTC
Hello!
I'm traveling to Guatemala for 10 days, I leave in a few weeks, and I'm wondering if I should get any shots before I go. Any suggestions?

Look up Foreign and Commonwealth Office on the Web and go to travel medical advice. Failing that, ask your doctor.

That would depend on what areas of the country you're planning on visiting. The use of anti-malaria medication is an issue that is being constantly discussed on the thorntree.lonelyplanet forum. So I suggest you search it there. I don't use anything because you have to watch out for the side effects of all stuff. Good luck.

I agree. You really don't need anything. All world travellers should probably have the basics but nothing specific for Guatemala. I haven't met anyone yet who has taken the anti-malarial meds.

However, a couple of shots for Hepatitis A will make you safe for 20 years from this food borne illness anywhere you go in the World. It used to be a gamma globulin shot in the butt every time heading off, but this wonderful improvement is almost a no-brainer.

YEAH GO TO YOUR LOCAL PRACTICE TO GET ALL THE BASIC TRAVEL INJECTIONS AND IT SHOULD KEEP YOU SAFE FOR A WHILE. IF YOU ARE ACTUALLY TRAVELLING TO THE NORTH TO PETEN AND TIKAL THEN YOU WILL NEED ANTI-MALARIA PILLS. DON'T LISTEN TO ANYONE WHO CLAIMS YOU DON'T NEED THEM.
