Skype.com (or similar services) would be your most practical and cheapest way to call to India (PC-phone calling). Check out their rates. You can set up an account now and test it. Skype rates are on:
http://www.skype.com/intl/en/products/skypeout/rat The normal calling rates to India (may differ per provider but this is the general price): landline: 1,25 euro per minute You're not saying if you will have your own computer, or will be working from somewhere? Or will you only be able to access internet from an internet cafe? Will your accommodation have internet access?

There are several companies that offer cheap calls abroad through 0900 numbers. You pay a fixed price for these 0900 numbers, which connect you to the number abroad of your choice. Often, these services are even cheaper than the SkypeOut rate (Calls through Skype from pc to pc are free of course).
Read e.g. here about it in english: http://www.telestunt.nl/english.php This site compares rates between these companies: http://www.televergelijk.nl/ (vast = land-line). The cheapest rate is 6 cpm. Cheers

BTW: note that you should not use these services through a public pay-phone, since you pay high extra charges for calling 090x-numbers using public pay-phones. You better use a normal landline !

Take a matrix cellphone connection from India itself. You can take a Specific number for Holland where the rental is one Euro per day or a U.K. roaming number which is good for all of Europe if you are travelling and has no rental. Receiving on the UK no is about Rs.26/- and calling is about Rs.76/- per min. SMS receiving is free but sending is Rs.40/-. The call rates for the Holland specific no are lower so it depends if you are travelling around or staying put in Rotterdam and how much usage you expect. If the place where you are staying has a phone where you can receive calls you can either give India a missed call or fix up a time when they can call you since a cellphone call FROM India costs the caller only Rs,8/- per minute and you will receive it free. But as ATCL has written, Skype is certainly your best bet if you have internet access. Surjit

Calling from Rotterdam, UK to India, the best rate is £0.029/ min with maintenance fee, or £0.05/ min without maintenance fee.
Check http://www.eecalling.com/p/?id_from_country=286&idcountry=72 to compare and find the best calling card for yourself. You can buy online via credit card or Paypal. Receive instant PIN by your email. Fast, simple and convenient.
