| Amalfi | Attire for men on Amalfi Coast Posted: Mon June 11, 2007 04:24 AM UTC
We're leaving soon with three other couples for two weeks on the Amalfi Coast. When we've travelled in Europe before my husband has always worn shorts for sight-seeing during the day and long pants at night in restaurants. The other men are thinking about the appropriateness of wearing dress-type shorts at dinner. From my experience, Italian men don't usually wear shorts, but we are tourists after all. Are there any Italian men out there who can give us some advice? Grazie!

the amalfi coast is no different than anywhere else - in a decent restaurant, showing up better dressed shows a little respect for the owner and his establishment, which will be manifested in the service you receive.

Being Italian, I can say that in my country changing into something a bit less casual for dinner is simply good manners. For men, long trousers (including jeans) are better than "dress-type" shorts.

I once went out for dinner with a sporty Italian man who wore dress shorts to dinner. I was VERY embarassed. He should have known better! He was Italian! It just looked and felt out of place.

Bermuda shorts (with shoes or sandals, no sleepers) not an Italian favorite but will work out in midrange restaurants. Regular shorts will make yourself, the owner and the other patrons feel unease. For nicest restaurants you'll need trousers.

Hi i definitely agree with all your answers, different if youre having a pizza place beside the beach sort of dinner but if you really mean dinner then the Italians particularly like, and particularly of course on most areas around Amalfi being upmarket, to look good. and also there are restaurants that are must things to do as they are and they are generally posh places in excellent spots which do require a nice standard of dress.
so yes its definitely a thing you find in Europe - a nice restaurant requires nicely dressed.
