Odessa Taxi or walk?
Posted: Sun June 10, 2007 02:04 PM UTC
I will be visiting Odessa for one day in September (on a cruise) and am curious if the sights in Odessa are within walking distance from the seaport? I prefer to visit on my own, preferring to avoid taxis, buses and the cruiseline excursions. Any help would be appreciated!

As far as I can remember, yes. Climb the Potemkin steps and you're right in the centre.

yes, in fact you find a lot to explore on your own easyly from the place, where the cruiseships dock.

Probably yes. What sights are you looking for?

At the seaport you will see the Potemkin Stairs. You can take the lift on the left to avoid the gypsies on the stairs and avoid getting tired to begin with. You can walk down them on your return. Turn left at the top of the stairs and go to the armory (or something. It has a cannon and a fountain). Turn right at the armory and up the hill to get to the Opera House. Turn left at the street in front of the OH to Deribaskaya Street.
Turn right and walk to the portion of the street that is blocked off. There are some good restaurants and outdoor cafes there. If you like architecture you may like Passage across from the park (although the park was closed for construction last September when I was there).

I'll be visiting Odessa again July 16th if you have anything you want checked out.

It depends on what you want to see. If it's simply museums -yes you can do it on foot, if you wish to visit Belgorod-Dnestrovskaya fortress or Vilkovo so car is the only way.

Hey, I knew something and I had to tell someone. :) If you have time, something you might also enjoy, if you like dancing, is Arkadiya. Lots of outdoor discos. They don't get hopping until very late, though . I wouldn't suggest going alone. Maybe you'll meet a cute guy on the cruise ship. :) If you don't know Russian, it would still be easy to get taxi. Just say "Arkadiya" and they'll know where you want to go. On your way back (depending on your alcohol consumption) just say "Odessa Hotel" (assuming your ship docks next to it).

Everyone is right. Odessa is very easy to navigate. You can even go to http://www.odessaapts.com/ to print a very simple and easy to follow map. Check online where you want to visit or eat and mark on map for while you walk around. If you want any suggestions, just ask. I have been there 4 times and will be there again Sept. 12 - 22.
