I'm wondering why you would need to, seeing as the two towns are right next door to each other and trains run all the time. You can buy tickets at the station from multilingual vending machines, using a credit card or bank card..

Many thanks. The reason I was asking is that we are visiting by ship for the day and hope to get to see Pisa and the tower with 2 children(aged 11 and 12) and back before missing the departure. A little rushed I know, but thanks again for the ticketing and train info.
Any idea of return prices ? Rob

It's been a few years since I made that trip, but it's very inexpensive.
Given a full day you should have more than enough time. The Livorno station is about a 15-20 minute walk from the port, and from Pisa Central station it's about a 20 minute walk to the Cathedral complex. There are some attractive things along the way besides that tower. www.trenitalia.com for rail timetables.

Most of the trains that run along this line and make both stops are regional trains. These are like "local" trains for us. They don't take reservations, so, as dnw says, there's not a lot of point of buying tickets in advance, because if you have a ticket (even bought at the station at the last minute), you can get on, even if you stand.
Since the trip is all of 15 minutes (or less), standing won't be a problem. Think of these trains as more of a municipal transit system than an airline where seats are normally reserved. Of course, there are many other trains in Italy that are higher-end, and require reservations - some which which stop at Livorno and Pisa - but it's easy to avoid them. Note that the current 2nd class price one way (no discount for round trip) on the regional trains is 1.70 euro; the higher end trains will be more expensive, so why bother? Many people here have reported real difficulties in buying tickets on Trenitalia through the website, so just do as dnw says...just go to the station, use the self-service machines (if any, otherwise, the teller), buy your tickets and get on the next regional train ("R"). If you look at the Trenitalia website (you might go to www.trenitalia.com/en/index.html to find the English pages more conveniently), you will see that there are at least 2 trains an hour, with 4 or 5 during rush hours. It really is almost like riding a bus...oh, and make sure you validate your ticket before you get on the train... Bill

Thanks for your comments, we had a great trip and managed to get up the Leaning Tower in Pisa having pre-booked online, a must these days, if you want to do it. One thing we did notice was that the trains only ran twice per hour not 4 times as expected from the summer online timetables. Worth checking when you get to the station before travel if time is a little tight. Italian trains are very reasonably priced too compared to UK trains. It cost Euro16.30 return (Livorno - Pisa - Livorno) for 2 adults and 2 children, on 26th July 2007, great value and easy to do.

It's nice to have feedback on what actually happens...we appreciate it...and we're glad you got to the tower because of (or despite of) our sage advice ;-)

Is it possible for you to show me how to reserve the ticket to the Tower? Thank you very much.
