| Chobe National Park | Transfer from Chobe to Livingstone/Victoria Falls Posted: Thu June 7, 2007 09:28 PM UTC
I plan to rent a car in Johannesburg with some friends and drive my way through Botswana to the Victoria Falls. It seems to be no problem to cross the border to Botswana with a rented car, but all car hire companies say something like "No cross border rentals are allowed from South Africa to Malawi, Angola or Zambia, even if returning to South Africa."
I would like to know if there are possibilities to park the car in Kasane and if, in such cases, there are transfer possibilities across the border. |

Are you not able to cross the border into zimbabwe? Most rental agreements will allow you to cross into Zimbabwe. You can drive from Kasane to Vic Falls and see the falls from that side and then leave your car somewhere secure and walk across to the Zambian side.

I'm in the same situation as the original poster, although I'm renting a vehicle from Gaborone and then travelling up to Kasane/Chobe (spend 2 nights there) and then cross the ferry into Zambia and head to Livingstone.
Travelling via Zimbabwe is not really an option at the moment, so under the circumstances, does anyone know of any rental companies in Gaborone who do allow their vehicles to be taken into Zambia, and assist with the necessary paperwork for use when crossing the border? The only workaround I can think of is to park the car (rented from Gaborone) in Kasane, cross the ferry on foot, and then have a pre-arranged Zambian hired car await us on the Zambian side of the ferry (Kazangula). In that case, does anyone know of any car rental companies that can deliver and collect cars to/from Kazangula?

To travel via Zimbabwe not good right now as you cant get Petrol/fuel there at the moment. You can walk over ferry and should be able to get a mini bus taxi into Livingstone if you cant get car hire. This will mean you travel with locals in the mini bus and will most likely be dropped at the Market in Livingstone.I know AVIS car rental used to have cars in zambia.. not sure if they still do.
