Choice of a route around Rijeka Posted: Sun June 3, 2007 08:28 PM UTC
On Friday, we slept in Bakarac, on our way home. In the morning, we drove towards Rijeka and found a road sign in Bakar that showed the direction of Zagreb by the motorway. We skipped it and went further towards Rijeka, looking for a road sign that would show the way to Ljubljana and Trieste. After a while, we found one that led us on the heights of Rijeka. At most cross roads, the road signs showed Zagreb and Pula but not any more Trieste or Ljubljana. As the direction to Trieste should be between the directions for Pula and Zagreb, we followed that directions but that might be confusing to those that do not know the country. However, this is not my question. We finally reached the highway to Zagreb, Ljubljana and Trieste and after a few kilometers, we were in front of… the Bakar way out!
My question is : though the entrance into the highway at Bakar says only "direction Zagreb", is it possible nevertheless to enter on the highway to get to Trieste or is the junction to Trieste between the Bakar entrance and Rijeka and thus impossible to reach from the Bakar entrance?
Another question : the new highway from Split to Senj is excellent when you need to drive fast and not to visit any location on the way. However, the road signs give the direction of Rijeka entirely by the highway, which ads about 70 km. I preferred the apparently short way, and left the highway to Senj and followed the regular road. However, I am not sure that it was a good choice, as we must drive from elevation 1000m to elevation 0m to go to Senj, which is not really fast. Any opinion?
