Shanghai Advise on hotel
Posted: Sat June 2, 2007 02:00 AM UTC
Hi all,

I will be spending 6 days in Shanghai with wife, a 3-year old and a 5-year old. I need some advice on my choice of hotel from those who know Shanghai better.

Travelling with children, I need a hotel with
1) clean room, toilet and prompt house keeping.
2) location, with food stalls, convenience stall, laundry at the doorstep.
3) easy access to locations of interest.

I am willing to pay for location and cleanliness, but not for swimming pools, gymnasium, etc.

Any pointer will be much appreciated. Thanks! :-)

I think the City Hotel would be good for your needs...or the Ritz Carlton. I liked both of them and the City Hotel is in the French Concession, so it has a few parks near the hotel, which would be good for your children. The service was impeccable at both hotels, and, of course, both were clean with easy access to many points of interest. The Jin Jiang hotel (near the City Hotel) is lovely as well...we loved it , but with children it might not be the best...City Hotel has a pleasant and large cafe area with many magazines and newspapers and that kind of relaxed feeling that makes a hotel feel homier..plus, it is very reasonable. . Hope this helps.

I agree that the City hotel is a good hotel in a very good area. It is my favorite in Shanghai. I also have stayed at the Grand Pacific (Tai Ping). It is a 29 floor hotel that seems to hold several investment companies that control groups of floors. It is only 2 years old, and some of the groups treat the hotel rooma as furnished apartments. The rooms come with a coffee pot, heat pad, fridge and a microwave. It is in one of the best locations in Shanghai, Nanging and Shanxi roads. It is next to several malls with great restaurants and a McDonalds for the kids. Down the street, be sure to eat at Bi Feng Tang, the sidewalk restaurant with a good Chinese food and english menu.

See my Shanghai page for more information on both the City and Grand Pacific hotels. http://members.virtualtourist.com/m/1e4db/f4fc8/3/

we travel a lot with our kids, I would recommend looking for a service apartment instead of a regular hotel as you may not want to eat out with a 3/5 years old every day. There are many nice service apartments around Shanghai depending on price and location.

Shanghai City Hotel central?
Posted: Sun July 1, 2007 09:51 PM UTC
Could you tell me if the City Hotel that you recommend is central downtown? Are the shops and restaurants easily accessible by foot? If not could you recommend any hotels that are central, reasonable and not too expensive..about £40 - £45 per room per night.

Many thanks

Hotel rates in Shanghai are as expensive as any large cities in Europe like London, Paris or Rome. For 40 to 45 pounds (<700 RMB) the selection is very limited!

The City Hotel is well located, It is not near the Bund, but just a short taxi or subway away. It is 4 blocks from the subway, and the main shopping district. It is 2 to 3 blocks from malls and good chinese restaurants like Bi Feng Tang (see my page on Shanghai restaurants)that have English menus.

Equally good is the pacific grand hotel. It is actually closer to food and subway, and much newer. This hotel is also on my Shanghai page.

The Taxis in Shanghai are cheap and good, don't worry about using them.

Yes, it is in a better location. It is also newer and the rooms are great. The City was showing some age last time I was there. The only thing I don't like is breakfast is extra. There is a good sandwich shop and Mc Donalds nearby for breakfast if saving a few bucks is an issue.

This hotel is a few hundred meters from 2 malls and the CITIC travel agency. Bi Feng Tang, my favorite restaurant, is just a half Km down the road. The subway entrance is about 2 1/2 blocks away, so close that I use it to go to the Maglev and the airport. It helps to avoid all the trafic to the airport. Jing An temple is just up the street.

Nanjing Road is rather long and the Jing An section is at the western end of the road. You will still have to take a taxi or subway to the Nanjing walking street near the bund. You will probably also want to taxi to the shopping area on wahai road, about 7 blocks away. Xin Tian Di, the bund and the tourist attractions are all a taxi or subway ride away. Learn to ride the subway, it is easy!

I don't have the direct email address for this hotel. Just search for it on Google and you will find many agencies, like Asia rooms, that represent this hotel. Also notice that there are several companies that rent sections of the hotel. One is Grand Pacific LBO. They seem to operate the top floors. I have seen another that runs some middle floors. The tip off is which floor you check in on. You can search the LBO section as a seperate company such as: http://www.asiatravel.com/china/shanghai/gpLBO/index.html

Thanks but everything I tried resulted in no availabily or no information for this hotel? I even tried different dates out of curiosity (as I think its Formula one that week) but they produced same results. Think I may go with City Hotel instead.

You're trying to book too early in advance. I would check in late August for those.
