Antigua Guatemala Only have 4 hours in Antigua... which sites to see
Posted: Thu May 31, 2007 03:21 PM UTC
We'll only have about 4 hours in Antigua. I've done research but I'd like input on which sites are a must-see and how close they are to each other, if they are in walking distance of each other. Would appreciate other suggestions if I've left something out. Here's my list: Vera Cruz cross, Jade Factory, local mercado and artisans mercado, Las Capuchinas Convent, courtyard of Posada Don rodrigo, 5A Avenida, arch of Santa Catalna, pastel-colored houses, Merced Church, Cathedral of Antigua, Casa Santo Domingo, Main Square, San Francisco.

Hi there, I would think that you'll be better off taking a tour. Otherwise you'll be wasting your time not finding the sites right away. The Tourists Police scorts groups of tourists to walk up to Cerro de la Cruz because its not a safe site to visit alone. The rest of the city you can visit on your own. There are several sites where you can find maps of antigua. So, that you locate the places you want to visit ahead of time. Good luck.

Arco de Santa Catalina
Ning P'ot crafts (next door to Arco)
Merced Church (one block from Arco)
Then a nice 15 min. walk to the Casa Popenoe (only open from 2 to 4, and closed on Sundays)
Then back and finish at the Catedral on the Parque Central

This should fill four hours nicely, not rushing too much.

Be sure to have a map handy. Although grid based, the town in confusing. Visit my page for more information. Good luck.
