Rostovskaya Oblast' Seeking general information about Rostovskaya Oblast
Posted: Thu May 31, 2007 12:32 PM UTC
Hello,

I plan a travel to Setraki (about 130 km North on Rostov) and I would be grateful to know some thinks.

- weather
For avoiding cold and rain, what is the best sesons to travel?

- genealogy issues
Is there a state archive in one of the bigger cities in Rostovskaya Oblast? Is the acces possible for a genealogy research?

- other practical issues?

Thanks, merci!

In accordance with Russian internet resources there is special commercial company in Rostov-na-Donu which (as I understand) an affiliate of State archive. Their specialization is investigation in genealogy. Just to note that the state archive in Rostov was damaged a lot during WW2 - so about 3 500 000 files were lost (official information). But the page is in Russian: http://www.rodoslovec.ru/usl/

And this is the site of non-commercial genealogical society in Rostov, I guess you can ask people in the forum there in English too, at least I found the similar situation with investigations in Setraki (former Setrakovo) houtor.

Besides there is another option - very popular over the world Russian non-commercial project (here is version in English): http://poisk.vid.ru/?l=1
It's oriented to the search of people, but there were a lot of cases then put together people from different continents - descedents of one ancestor.
This project is absolutely free and work with assistance of volunteers.

Thanks! Actually I knew about this TV program, but the fact they receive about half millions requests monthly discouraged me.

I hope it is OK if I continue a while adjacent to the genealogical subject.
The reason I wish visit Khutor Setraki (former Setrakov) is that my Great Grand Father was in a Cossack family from this place. His name was Grigori Petrovich Setrakov. He last all contact with Russia and his relatives after the communist revolution.
Khutor Setrakvov is mentioned in the beginning of Sholokhovs roman “Tickhi Don”.

However, I tried to find out the etymology of this name, because toponymics use to mean something. I did a research on the Web (not a scientific one) and came to a hypothesis which is not really confirmed.

I would like to ask you about your spontaneous opinion about this word, “Setrakov”. Just for this reason I don’t want to reveal my conclusions. It would be exciting to know what a native Russian thinks about this. Thank you!

George

P.S. I am sorry my Russian is very basic.
