| Hurghada | trip to cairo and the pyramids Posted: Wed May 30, 2007 06:46 PM UTC
Does anyone have a credible suggestion of a tour that they took (plane prefered) from Hurghada to Cairo to see the pyramids?
also any tip info. I am confused by this concept? how much Livre do you tip to each person who helps you - whats the average tip so we can make sure we get the accurate change.. like if we go scuba, do how much do we tip the person who takes us out compare to the people who take us on a tour to the pyramids. Thanks. nadine and does everyone usually get a bit sick tummy wise by the end? excited for Egypt nadine |

look nadine .. when you be in Hurghada you would search for tourism companies offers for visiting cairo cuz you know cairo is full of interesting places not only pyramids .. and even in pyramids it needs an expert guide to help you see everything there and to enjoy it .. btw you can do it by yourself too .. its not so hard .. you would take a plane from hurgada to cairo .. in cairo the airport is kinda far from giza and pyramids and the only available way to reach pyramids is by taking taxi and you will find much in the airport .. and about the tips i think you mean lire .. in egypt its egyption pound .. the official currency in egypt .. the average of it is $1 = 5.7 l.e .. so i think no body can help you in the tip thing cuz you know it depends on many things like how much are you satisfy and the kind of service you get .. but you should know that its totally optional so no one will say where's my tip and things like that :D .. but in general DONT exaggerate in giving tips .. and about the bit sick tummy wise i didnt understand it so i cant help :d .. so i wish you a good trip and bye bye =]

A taxi from the airport in Cairo to downtown Cairo is LE40, so expect to pay between LE40 - LE60 to get to Giza and the Pyramids. The journey takes around 45 mins in traffic from the airport to central Cairo and about another 15 minutes to Giza.
You can use a guide or you can do it yourself. Get yourself a good guidebook before you travel and you can find out almost all there is to see before you travel. One thing not to miss at the Pyramids is the Solar Boat museum (by the side of the Great Pyramid). The boat was almost completely intact when it was discovered and personally, I think this is one of the best museums dedicated to Egyptian antiquities. The Egyptian museum is in the centre of Cairo - about 15 mins drive from the Pyramids, so if you want to see Tutenkhamun's treasures too you will need to allow time to do this. Internal flights can be booked very cheaply on Egyptair's own website. For peace of mind - if you want to arrange everything in advance for the Cairo part of your tour I can recommend Mr Sherif at www.memphistours.com - you can book everything online with a small deposit (pay the rest when you get there). We just used him for part of our last itinerary and the service was excellent! For any tummy upset - get the local remedy Antenal (very cheap from local chemists), it's similar to Imodium. Tip: If you take regular medication in UK, check out the local chemists in Egypt for same / similar products. I bought Allergan eye drops for equivalent of Cy0.20, which cost me CyŁ2.60 at home! Antihistamine are dirt cheap too. Go into one of the bigger chemists - they have stack fulls of stuff. Take any packaging for your usual medication so you can get them to check the ingredients. Enjoy! Regards Michele (Cyprus4Holidays)

Thanks so much. With the other reply my questions have been answered and not to feel so concerned about everything and that I can even do it on my own, which originally I wanted but my boyfriend thought I was a bit too adventurous...
SO thanks for that confirmation. looking forward to my trip.

If you arrive in Hurghada, it is only the company that picks you up from the airport that is allowed to sell a Cairo or Luxor trip to you. Your options are to pay that company whatever they ask or to do it by yourself.
If you want to do it by yourself, you can fly or take a bus to Cairo. Egyptair has cheap tickets online and there are buses between the cities many times a day for around 10 euro per way. (55 - 75 Egyptian pounds). If you take the bus, El Gouna Bus or Superjet are the ones to take, the third company has cheap but stinky buses. Tips to people depends... but it is common to tip people who help you. From 1 LE for a helping hand with the luggage in the bus to about 10% in a restaurant. If you go diving it is up to you and the service you get, but for sure the boat crew and the dive master like to get tipped. On a one week live-aboard you tip the crew 20 euro for a week... so why not half of it for the crew on a daily diving boat if you have been diving a week and ten for the divemaster?
