Hi,
Sorry cannot help you with the public holiday but thought I would help you with some information of the areas around Padang. Here is a report from a traveller who stayed in Bukittinggi ( 1.5 hr bus ride from Padang) and Lake Maninjau area for 3 months March-June 2006. I helped her secure a social visa through a good Indonesian friend of mine Hendri who lives in Bukittinggi and takes travellers on treks and shows them around the area. http://tinyurl.com/y4t5mn Here are photos taken of Bukittinggi, Lake Maninjau, the trek between the two taken on my 5.5 month trip through the Indonesia in 2006. http://www.webshots.com/user/ppamela2006 Another area I absolutely love is 2.3 hrs south of Padang by bus namely Painan. Here are photos taken from my 2004/2005 trip to the area. http://travel.webshots.com/album/349086449oYfNie I took lots of photos last year but have not put them up yet. Pamela.
