Monterrey Moving to Monterrey
Posted: Tue May 29, 2007 03:57 AM UTC
My husband was offered a promotion and asked to relocate to Monterrey. I'm not sure I want to do this because I'm a little concerned about the crime and violence I heard about in Monterrey. Is it safe? What do I really need to know. I would really appreciate any feedback.

Thank you very much.

This has been the worst year in city history, concerning the deaths among the members of the bands dedicated to the drug trafficking; 75 deaths to this day, and counting. But I think the crime and the violence among the rest of the citizens, is below the average compared to other Mexican cities.(Monterrey with almost four million inhabitants).
This is what the expert's said in this Mexican Security Organization (ONG) about Nuevo León, in comparison with other States:http://www.icesi.org.mx/

If you use common sense, and avoid certain areas, you would be safe.

Maybe the most scary thing about the city, is the traffic. Everyone drives like crazy.

Good Luck !

I agree with Juancrocet. I have been to Monterrey many times and I did feel that the city was much safer than the other cities I have visited in Mexico. Another thing to keep in mind is that the people in Monterrey are extremely nice and friendly. They would really go out of their way to help you out. Hope you will enjoy your stay there!!

Crime raised due the drug policy right now (narcotrafico).
I have most of my relatives living there and they still have a normal life like in any other city, except of two things specifically a) traffic and b) rush hours and probably driving at night.

Try focus your activities in day time and avoid suspicious areas.
Monterrey is for most of Mexico, the city that looks the most to the US.

Here i found some info i thought in may be helpful from other people who moved already:

There are some people from Monterrey here in Virtualtourist, if you search for them and email directly for specific facts, i am pretty sure they will share their experiences with you in case they don't read your question here in the forum.

Good luck!
