| Lucca | Too hot in August? Posted: Tue May 29, 2007 02:04 AM UTC
Hi
I had been hoping to come to Lucca for a couple of weeks in August, but am concerned it may be too hot at this time of year, after hearing that local business' sometimes close for the month of August due to the heat. Also being inland and not benefitting from a sea breeze, does it get really humid? My kids are fair skinned. Any advice welcome. Meg |

We don't know where you are from, so it's difficult to tell you if it will be too hot.
Look at www.weather.com for monthly averages for Lucca. You will see that the average high in August is 83F (28C) and the average low is 62F (17C). Depending on where you are coming from, this can be delightful weather. Generally, it will be warm to hot during the day, and cool off in the evening, especially away from the city. The local businesses close because of a long-standing tradition in Italy in which everyone used to stop what they were doing and take the month of August off. One reason they did this was because August was the only time of year in which it is warm enough to sit on a beach and swim in the sea...Well, I am exaggerating, but not by much. Yes, it is warm in August, but it is not so hot that you can't function. Note that tourist places are normally open - this is when all the tourists come. The biggest problem that foreigners have in August is the air-conditioning...either there isn't any (why spend the money for 2 months a year?) or it is underpowered compared to what they are used to. Consider renting an apartment that has AC. As McCalpin says there are not many AC'ed places and it is usually underpowered but it might help you sleep better. I am renting this place in June and it has AC - a rarity in Lucca.
