| Porto | VISITING PORTO Posted: Mon May 28, 2007 02:47 PM UTC
Hello,
I'm visiting the city of Porto the last week of June. I'd like to visit some nearby places to Porto so could anyone recommend some interesting places close to it? Thanks Jose |

Depends on how many days you will be staying. Going up the river Douro should be an amazing experience. Either by boat or on some old trains.

You should try go up Rio (river) Douro, starting in the city (Ribeira) all the way to Peso da Régua. It is an unique experience. Or you could do a similar route by train instead, in a very antique one, it is equally amazing.
There are many places to visit in the centre, such as Clérigos tower, Castelo do Queijo (a fortress in the coast), the City Park, Ribeira (the ancient part of the city, particularly beautiful at night), the six bridges over Rio Douro, Estádio do Dragão (FC Porto new stadium, built in 2003), Palácio da Bolsa or Palácio de Cristal. These are just few of the spots worth visitng while there.

Hi there!
I m visiting Porto for 2 days in July too. The trip along Douro which I hear is a very good option, could it be done by car? Is there a motorway? Because all recommend it by boat or train...

Hi!
There are very interesting places Within the city ( go to http://travel.nytimes.com/2007/04/01/travel/01next.html ) and around. Wonderfull beaches in Vila Nova Gaia and Espinho, bars and restaurants in Matosinhos and Leça da Palmeira. You have to do the Douro cruise: go up by boat and return by train!! Cities close to Porto: Viana do Castelo, Guimarães, Braga and a little further Aveiro and Coimbra. See you there, Dinora

Thank you very much,
During this week I had already decided the places I'll be visiting near Porto and they were Guimaraes and Braga, like the ones you have recommended. I see I had made a good choice : ) Greetings from Barcelona Jose
