rough and quick estimate: somewhere between 10 Euro and 20 Euro depending on the train quality, speed and so on. Eurocity/Intercity gives me 15.50 Euro.

Yes, 8.20 Euro- but it is for the regional service only.
Intercity train will be 15.50. Eurostar will be even more - not worth to use it. In general, every train has own price in Italy and the price can also depend on how early it is booked etc. Trenitalia web ite is notorious to be hard to navigate and certain trains/cars maybe neot even there. Best is if not traveling internationally: go to the station and buy the tickets there.

As you can see from the links that GyuriFT and Jesper gave, there are various trains that make this trip. The trips appear to all be in the 1.5 to 2.0 hour range. www.viamichelin.com estimates that if you had your own car and drove yourself, it would be an hour and a half, and since buses don't go as fast as cars...the train sounds like the best bet.
In this case, since there is relatively little difference timewise between the slower regional trains and the faster ICPlus and EC trains, but the regional (iR) trains are half the price...well, if price is an object, this decides it for you ;-) Note that the regional trains don't take reservations; as noted, you just show up at the station and get on the next one...if there's room to stand, you can get on. The ICPlus and EC trains require reservations...however, frequently, you can get the reservation minutes before at the station...but they can "fill up" which would make you wait until the next one. That's about the best we can do for you, since we don't know where you are starting in Milan, where you are going in Genova, or other parameters of your trip... Bill
