Düsseldorf Dusseldorf to Bamberg
Posted: Sat May 26, 2007 09:50 AM UTC
Hello there,

I like to go to Bamberg from Dusseldorf in the middle of June.
I am not sure if it is cheaper to travel by train or by air, anyone can advise?
Also, if by train, is it a direct train or required transit?

I will go to Frankfurt from Bamberf thereafter, do i also travel by trains?

Thanks in advance for help.

The cheapest fare for the train from Düsseldorf to Bamberg is 99 euro according to this website http://reiseauskunft.bahn.de/bin/query.exe/en

Would be pretty bad idea to buy that way, 40 Euro loss at least. :-(

How about this?

Use this link: http://www.bahn.de/p/view/preise/surf_rail/surf_rail_internat.shtml

- Düsseldorf-->Köln by local train (under 10 Euro, IC =10 Euro)
- Köln-->Nürnberg for 39 Euro using Köln-->Vienna on-line ticket and de-training in Nürnberg or Würzburg or Regensburg (many still available for that price)
- Nürnberg-->Bamberg: 10.60 Euro by local tran

Total: 10+39+10.60 = 59.60 Euro or less (because I used Intercity service between Düsseldorf and Köln).

Thank you, guys.

I use Cheapoair.com to find very good air flight from Dusseldorf to Nuremberg and take a local trans from there to Bamberg. It costs USD21++, of course the price of tickets varies as it goes along.

I have another question: anyone knows which is best way to travel from Bamberg to VS-Schwenningen? is this city same as Vicilin-Schwenningen and cover by trains services?

I don't understand Germans and have difficulties looking for these info from Deutche Bahn web site. Any one can help? Thank you in advance.

I am sorry, the actual address is:

Hakenjos Gmbh
Eichendorffstrabe 37
78054 VS-Schwenningen

Which city is nearest to the above address? Is it covered by train services?
Is VS-Schwenningen similar Villingen-Schwenningen?

Dont forget to add the tax. As I see, the tax is $60.97 and up. Furthermore, these "taxes" do vary from airline to airline. Given the transportation costs from Nürnberg airport to Nürnberg station you may be better but maybe worse than with the train, it depends strongly on the schedule.

"Vicilin-Schwenningen" is near Moussaka, capital or pRussia. :-/

Joke aside, there is Villingen-Schwenningen http://www.villingen-schwenningen.de/ in Baden-Württemberg. The regular price is 46.30 in regular trains but it is foolish to buy it:

If you are the only in the party:

- Buying a Bayern Länderticket 19 Euro "single" in ticketmachine
- Buying a Baden-Württemberg Länderticket 18 Euro "single" in ticketmachine

And you are done, 19+18 = 37 Euro and besides, it also covers the earlier Nürnberg->Bamberg section if you do it the same day.

If more than one person in the party:

- Buying a Bayern mini-group Länderticket 27 Euro in ticketmachine
- Buying a Baden-Württemberg mini-group Länderticket 27 Euro in ticketmachine

That means, for a total of 54 Euro up to five people can travel together the same day.

The rules in Englsh about "Happy-Weekend-Ticket" and the regional "Länderticket"-s are here:

http://www.bahn.de/p/view/international/englisch/travelservice/price_tourist.shtml
http://www.bahn.de/p/view/international/englisch/travelservice/laender_tickets.shtml

, 27 Euro for several people in ticketmachine) and Baden-Württemberg Länderticket (or a "Schönes-Wochenende Ticket".

The correct address is Eichendorffstraße 37, Schwenningen am Neckar according to ViaMichelin http://www.viamichelin.com/viamichelin/gbr/tpl/hme/MaHomePage.htm
The German letter ß are a double s.
The nearest railway station is Schwenningen in the same town.

So you do at least 3 longer trips?
Düsseldorf - Bamberg
Bamberg - VS-Schwenningen
VS-Schwenningen - Frankfurt

Than I would recommend a German Rail Pass 4 days in 1 month 2nd class.
http://www.bahn.de/p/view/international/englisch/travelservice/german_rail_pass.shtml
EUR 169,00.
If you use it on just 3 days, a pass day will be EUR 56,33. Still less than single p2p tickets. And more comfortable as you don't have to buy a new ticket each trip.

DB asks for 7 work days for shipping world wide.

At the DB timetable you can use
http://reiseauskunft.bahn.de/bin/query.exe/e
"D" for Düsseldorf
"Schwenningen(Neckar)" for VS-Schwenningen *)
"FRA airport" for Frankfurt Airport

*) Villingen and Schwenningen merged togethere to one town in the 70s. As there are also a number of villages belongen to this town, all places are referred as VS-<suburb> as Villingen-Schwennningen-<suburb> seems to long. And in the case of Villingen-Schwenningen-Schwenningen it would look also strange. The railway stations are older and have kept their names from before the merger of both towns.

> Given the transportation costs from Nürnberg airport to Nürnberg station

This is actually the least worry as Nürnberg airport has a direct U-Bahn connection and is within the city limits (-> about 2 Euro for a ticket). But the taxes are a lot more substantial.

My apology for late come back.
Many thanks for replies and helps.

Question:

1.Which route is more efficient in term of costing by trains?
Dusseldorf -> Bamberg -> VS -> Frankfurt? or
Dusseldorf -> VS -> Bamberg -> Frankfurt?

2.The 4day pass allows travel on DB for 4 days only?
All in all, my entire journey would be completed in 8 days. Any idea if there is such travel package on DB available?

Thanks for advise.

1.Which route is more efficient in term of costing by trains?
a) with a rail pass this won't play any role
b) Dusseldorf -> Bamberg -> VS -> Frankfurt
is slightly more logical

2.The 4day pass allows travel on DB for 4 days only?
Yes. But the 4 days must not be consecutive days. It could be any 4 days in the time span of one month.
> Any idea if there is such travel package on DB available?
There are also passes for 5, 6, ..., 10 days in 1 month. But 4 is the minumum.
And as you have only 3 travel days a 4 days in 1 month pass would be more than sufficient.
http://www.bahn.de/p/view/international/englisch/travelservice/german_rail_pass.shtml
Two important quotes from this page:
I. German Rail Pass Booking
Please order in sufficient time. The Pass will be sent to you by regular mail.
II. You also can purchase the German Rail Pass (5 or 10 days passes) a
at selected major train stations in Germany.
To my knowledge these are the stations you can also buy Eurail passes at.

Note: Düsseldorf is not among them!

Thank you, Alabada.

I have a problem. As i will be leaving in a few more days time, i don't think it would be in-time for me to receive the tickets before i leave. Is there any other type of tickets that i can buy at Dusseldorf at a discount rate to travel to Bamberg -> Schwenningen -> Frankfurt? I do not mind to pay online by credit cards.

You can buy the discounted ticket on-line, print it out and present it with your c/c and ID to the conductor. You will need a good quality laser printer.

From 10. June on new specials (Dauer-Spezial) will be available.
750.000 discounted tickets (that's that much) per month for prices from EUR 29,00 to 69,00 if you buy them online or via ticket machine. At the counter you have to pay a surcharge of EUR 5,00 per ticket.
These tickets have be bought at latest 3 days before the travel date.
These tickets are only valid for the booked connection. They are not flexible like normal price tickets.
You can buy them online (from 10. June on) through the DB timetable and print them out on your printer. Don't forget to bring the printout and the credit card you used to pay for if (as a proof of identity).
