Delaware Camping and Rafting
Posted: Fri May 25, 2007 04:52 PM UTC
I'm hoping one of you locals can help me out here. I'm looking for a place to go camping that's not withing camp grounds, but legal or a campground that you can hike to find your own spot along the river. Every place I call or see onling provides a fire ring and a location that they choose for you. I really love to camp and don't want much help or people around. Is this possible?

I'm also looking for the best area for white water.

Thanks for your help!

I'm not sure which river you mean (Delaware has a couple of them) but in general, I'd say you are unlikely to find what you are looking for. This is a densely populated state, and whatever land is not a state park is going to be privately owned and not available for camping (a.k.a. trespassing!). State and municipal parks are rather strict about where you are allowed to camp--it won't be just anywhere.

There is zero whitewater in Delaware, too, BTW. If you mean the Delaware River, you're going to be looking at spots in either Pennsylvania or NJ. The same issues on camping apply in those states also.

Try searching the Water Gap area. There are some small towns such as Point Pleasant Pa. with good white water and camping. I don't know if you can still hike to your own spot though.
