Wine and Spirits in Prague
Posted: Thu May 24, 2007 10:34 PM UTC
I have been reading the comments on this site and beer is obviously a big attraction , but I am a spirited lady and not fond of beer even if it is the best in the world!
Could anyone kindly tell me what the local spirits are like . I am partial to brandy or rum or should I take my own?
Also could anyone recommend a decent white wine med dry please.

I will be most grateful.
Thankyou
Norma

There is a wonderful Becherovka liquor that my
female friends drank in Prague:

Unfortunately we found it difficult
to obtain back in the USA!

Have a great trip.

I like Becherovka & tonic; called Beton (Czech for concrete) Another drink sold in many places in Prague is Absinthe, which is illegal in many countries. There is a sort of procedure to drink it, where a large spoon is filled with Absinthe and a couple sugar cubes, ignited and once extinguished, stirred into a tumbler of the aforementioned liquor. There is a famous Picasso painting of the "Absinthe Drinker" Na zdrovi

As a beer and wine lover I was expecting to stick firmly to the beer when I visited Prague (it is good) but found that the very filling food wasn't a comfortable match with volumes of beer, so tried some of the local wines. Not bad, not bad at all. Amongst the whites, look out for Rulandske Sede which is a good take on Pinot Grigio.
