Forum Question Posted By: Replies:
Cairns Late July holiday, Cairns/Port
Posted: Tue May 22, 2007 10:58 PM UTC
Thanks to everyone regarding my previous post. My file is getting quite thick and will probably end up as being my main item of luggage!! Just a few questions more though. My wife and I are planning to go to the Tablelands and Cape Trib whilst we're in Cairns and Port Douglas. We have already hired a car. Are they good roads? Are there any steep climbs? Good signposts? We are in our mid '70's, and it would also be nice to have some travel companions for a few laughs and a bit of adventure. We are in Cairns 22nd--25th July. Port Douglas 25th July---3rd August. Anyone care to hop in beside us? Cheers, Alf.

They are good roads and if you drive the speed that is on the signs you will be fine. The road from Cairns to Port Douglas does have some curves that are tight, but don't worry it's OK if you doing a good speed. There are places that you can pull/drive to the side so the car behind can pass, make sure you use these if you are going slower as the ones behind you will be gratful for that and won't tailgate you.
The road from Cairns to Kuranda is step and curvy, but once again there are areas where you can pull/drive to the side and let others pass. Once you get from Kuranda onwards to Atherton/Mareeba etc the roads are straight and wide.
There are good signs along the highways, don't panic if you miss a sign, just go to the nbext round about or area where you can turn around....
You won't have a problem driving around Cairns as it is very well sign posted and easy, traffic lights etc.
I would love to meet up for a coffee one night when you are in Cairns...I will keep in touch:)
