| Volterra | Getting to Volterra from Florence Posted: Tue May 22, 2007 05:59 PM UTC
I am traveling to Florence in June and want to visit Volterra and San Gimignano. It seems that it is not that easy to get to Volterra by public transportation and that it takes a long time. The bus site is in Italian and I am having trouble with it. I don't want to sit on the bus all day with just a little time in Volterra.
Would I be better of renting a car for a day and seeing both Volterra and San Gimignano that day? I would want to spend as much time as possible in each place, but especially in Volterra. Thanks |

Go to the Sita site on:
http://www.sitabus.it/wps/portal/DovePartire_Toscana Click on the 'Linea Firenze-Siena' link. You'll get a downloadable timetable for Volterra, Siena and S. Gim in Italian and English. It takes just over an hour to both Volterra and S. Gim on the bus (you have to change buses in Poggibonsi for S. G.). No problem at all. I'll be doing it next week............

I am sure the bus will work out fine, but if you are ever going to drive anywhere in Italy thru the lovely Tuscan countryside, this is the trip to do it on.

Hi Kathy. We used buses and our leased car in Tuscany and both were enjoyable. Don't miss Volterra. It's fabulous!

Hi Sally
I decided to rent a car for the day so we could easily go to both places and enjoy the scenery on our schedule. We might even be able to come back to Florence on lesser traveled roads and see even more countryside. I leave in 7 days - simply cannot wait!

Going back, take the S222. It's the Chianti Wine Route and is beautiful. We had a stag jump out in front of us one night on that road. Gorgeous. (Of course, it wouldn't have been so nice if we'd hit it.)
Have a great trip. It is a stunning area.

Hi Sally, thanks for the suggestion - I had been looking at possibly coming back through Greve and I think this might be in the general area - will have to get the maps out.

Yes. S222 goes right through Greve. I've heard a lot of people say it's too touristy and it is touristy, but the triangular town square is nice; there are cute shops and restaurants, supposedly the best butcher in Italy (look for the wild boar in front of his shop) and on Saturday morning there is a really nice market.
Montefioralle just up the hill is a gorgeous all stone hill village.
