Ephesus Camel Wrestling
Posted: Sun May 20, 2007 08:40 PM UTC
I heard that each January is the typical turkish camel wrestling festival and I wonder if anyone can share of his ( hers ) experience in visiting the Selcuk area this time of year ( hotel & environments etc.).
I would like to come by car, because for me it is a relaxed 2 days trip and I can always travel around a little.
Much obliged, yours
Flo

Yes, I've been to the camel wrestling in January, and it is a fabulous spectacle -- held in the old Roman stadium of Ephesus, where gladiators used to battle. The male camels battle each other over possession of a female-in-heat, and they are all "dressed up" in carpets and ribbons and other decorations. Very colorful. There are wandering small bands of entertainers/minstrels, and little stalls of raki/beer, and sizzling kebabs on the grill. You won't be disappointed! I would probably stay in nearby Kusadasi (15-20 minutes away), with its selection of hotels that you can probably find online. The weather at that time is coldish, about 40-50 degrees F, and a coat is necessary.

Marianne, you're awesome...
I'm starting the preparations for the voyage ; even if it looks a bit cold , the image of grills and beer in the amphiteatre it is simply irresistible!

Hi we visited the Selcuk area in early Feb of this year. I guess we missed the camel wrestling but I still really enjoyed staying in Selcuk to visit the many other wonderful places of interest. Selcuk is much much smaller than Kusadasi and that is the type of place I enjoy the most when I travel. Small peaceful and quiet.

Lots of very interesting historical place to visit as well. Near to Selcuk and worth a day's visit are the ruins of Priene, Miletus, and Didyma. In Selcuk The church of St. John the Baptist, Virgin Mary's house, Ephesus, Temple of Artemis, the graves of the 7 sleepers, the Ephesus museum and the nearby village or Sirnce.

The weather for the most part was good and not too cold. However we did get just a small light snow when we visited the Virgin Mary's house. But that made it even more special.

You can find out more info on my travel pages from our trip and as well as my flickr website for photos of the area.

Thank you ; I looked over your pages on Selcuk - the tip with the hotel -; looks OK, since I also would like to take at least one of the kids with me.
Bye and good travels...
