| Palma de Mallorca | Solo traveler in Palma de Mallorca Posted: Sat May 19, 2007 06:04 PM UTC
I'm considering a short solo trip within the next few weeks. Can anyone provide any information on crime in the area (pickpockets, etc.) as well as the safety factor for a young woman traveling alone? Thanks! ~VR

We have had several holidays in Mallorca - usually staying in, or near, Pollensa -and have had no experience of theft at all.
The crime rate is relatively low but there are pickpockets, and the like, as there are in most places. So the sensible advice is to take care of your belongings, don't wear expensive looking jewels, watches etc. Parts of the island are seriously over developed, so in season even "remote" mountain attractions may be crowded with tourists arriving by coach from the very busy coastal resorts. Our three adult daughters love to go to Mallorca for short breaks but always at least two go together. They travel out of high season and look for quieter places to stay, away from the most overdeveloped areas like Magalluf, Palma Nova and S'Arenal. Mass tourism and the development of large resorts with sky scraper hotels has, over the years, attracted a fun loving but sometimes rowdy clientele from northern Europe, including the UK, whose behaviour has not enhanced the reputation of holiday visitors. Our girls (actually young women aged 35 -42) have found good accommodation from http://i-escape.com/country_summary_pts.php?countr Their idea of "night life" is to enjoy an evening meal, relaxing after a day spent swimming, reading, walking, and some sight-seeing. Really if you are the sort of person used to travelling alone and know how you like to spend your time, I can't think of any reason why you shouldn't have a great time.

My husband and I lived in Palma for a year once, and also traveled all around the island from time-to-time. Loved it! The only crime we experienced was someone stole the two seats off our locked bicycles one night. There are pickpockets, but no more than in any city, and we didn't have any encounters. I went out by myself alone plenty for shopping, my Spanish & aerobics classes, fresh market, bike-riding, etc., and no problems. I would just avoid rather deserted streets at night, like you probably would anywhere, don't wear a lot of bling, and don't leave things unguarded at the beach. Have a great time!

Hello...all the answers are accurrate. As in any other place U must be carefull with your personal belongings, try not to use to many jewelry and mosto f all don't walk on dark un-safe places in the outskirts of the city. I've been living in Palma already 2 years in one of the worst considered neighborhoods and nothing has happend until now. If U've more questions feel free to email me, also check out my Mallorca travel pages, for sure U'll find lot of info there toghether with pics...good luck!

Ilargitxo, I think she is concerned, because she's a single woman traveler, and when I travel alone (usually on business), I also like to know the risks of a place and which neighborhoods into which I should not venture. There is indeed some petty thievery throughout Spain, particularly in the bigger cities -- and I used to read about it in the Spanish newspapers. But it's no worse than anywhere else. And, BTW, we've had far more incidents of petty thievery/pickpocketing and such, in foreign countries than we've ever had living in the US. Why don't you come visit someday?

And I live in Palma de Mallorca already for 2 years and 4 months and I say that is not dangerous but there are pickpockets and small thieves that always look for tourists that don't pay attention to their personal things....
