| Kathmandu | Potala Guest House Posted: Fri May 18, 2007 08:12 AM UTC
Hi to all,
I have a plan to visit Kathmandu during the summer (July & August). Some friends have recommended Potala Guest House. Has anyone stayed there? Is it guest friendly? I shall be meeting an old GF and she intends to stay with me in the room. Do they allow that? Your assistance is very much appreciated. |

Hi,
I'm not sure what the Potala Guest House is like but I stayed at the Happy Valley Guest House in Bouddha (just in behind the boudhanath. I found the place to be very nice...clean, quiet with two very good restaurants just outside the gates. There is nighttime security and located right beside a Monastery for young monks. It was an interesting location within walking distance of the Kopan Monastery. I would recommend you go see it. It has beautifully painted architecture and wonderful grounds with a great view of the city. Feel free to email me if you would like more information. Voyota@hotmail.com Have a great time! forgot to mention... Me and my wife stayed at the Happy Valley, and I really don't think anyone would give it a second thought about a couple sharing a room while on vacation. Nepalese culture is quite reserved when it comes to displays of open affection, touching and kissing...that sort of thing but once you have your privacy in the hotel I wouldn't worry about it.
Cheers! Ron

Thanks Ron,
I would certainly visit the Happy Valley Guest House though it seems to be far away from the tourist area (Thamel Rd.) as I am told. Frankly speaking, I had some problems with my hotel last summer in Mumbai,Inida. They would not allow me to meet one of my friends who came to meet me from the South to stay with me in the room, though they had charged me for a double room. I hope the hotels in Nepal are not the same. Thanks again.

I haven’t stayed at Potala Guest House either but have heard quite good reports on it !!
If you can’t get in for whatever reason then you could try the Kathmandu View Guesthouse, It’s well placed and in a quiet location in north Thamel. Details on my travel pages. And as to the ethics of who you share a room with, I’m 100% sure that None of the Guesthouses in Nepal will give that a second thought !! Happy travels Rob
