The get around in Quito is easy, there are three types of buses you can take, the "populars" or blue ones, (least expensive); the "interparroquias" or pink which serve the suburbs of Quito such as Tumbaco, and the "selectivos" or red. All of these will stop if you signal even though you are not at the bus stop per se... There are also two lines of trolleys which run from North to the South, one along Avenida 10 de Agosto, the other one along Avenida 6 de Diciembre. The average cost for the buses and trolley are about 0.25 cents. There is also the bus terminal on Maldonado and Camanda which offer transportation to towns and provinces all over Ecuador; as well as private bus lines such as Panamericana at Colon and Reina Victoria, which also offer transportation to cities in Ecuador. I took Panamerica to travel to the coast, Esmeralda, for $9.00.
