| Pompeii | Pompeii Town Centre Posted: Thu May 17, 2007 06:37 PM UTC
I'll be visiting Pompeii on a day trip in June. I'm taking the Circumvesuviana train from Naples, alighting at Pompeii Scavi. Is it worth going into Pompeii town centre for an hour or so?
Most of the guides I have read only refer to the ruins. Nothing is mentioned about the town and it makes me think that it is probably not worth taking a stroll into town. |

Stick to the site - it takes a good few hours to see Pompeii properly and ehjoy the atmosphere. Pompeii town doesn't have anything out of the ordinary to recommend it. The station drops you so close to Pompeii too!
If you like archaeology - give Herculaneum a visit too :-)

Unless you're very interested in a museum of antique carriages, Pompei the town is about as interesting as any other threadbare industrial suburb around Naples.

No, not really worth it..unless it's for an ice cream in the evening. Almost everyone is out having a walk! Lovely atmosphere :)

I can't disagree with the other opinions ;-)
But if you really want to see the town, take the Trenitalia train from Naples to Pompeii...the FS (Trenitalia) station is on the other side of town from the Scvai, so you get to walk 10 or 15 minutes through modern Pompeii to get to the excavations...oh boy! No, don't bother, take the Circumvesuviana and stay in the ruins...;-) Bill

There is a beautiful Basilica in Pompei city centre, which is a place of pilgrimage in this area. To fit this into your visit, take the Circumvesuviana train destination Poggiomarina and get off at Pompei Santuario. Five minutes walk takes you to the church, then a further five minutes to the piazza Amfiteatro entrance to the ruins. Your route through the excavations could end at the Porta Marina exit, close to the Pompei Scavi station for the train back to Naples.
Best wishes Peter.
