Heading to the Mbaracayú Reserve Posted: Mon May 14, 2007 01:55 AM UTC
In early June, I'm heading from Iguazu Falls, Argentina, to the Mbaracayú Reserve in Alto Paraná, Paraguay. My question to people who are familar with this area of Paraguay: Are malaria pills really necessary for this region, especially since I will be there in the winter? I was told that it will be cool at night, getting down to 40 degrees F. Can mosquitoes live at temps below 50 degrees? I've heard about horrible side effects from malaria pills and want to avoid psychotic reactions, vision problems, upset stomach, etc. Chloroquine is recommended for Alto Paraná but I'm not sure if I should risk side effects. Won't I be fine if I bathe myself in DEET and sleep with a mosquito net?
Thanks,
Lauren
