Nantes Day stop in Nantes - any pointers?
Posted: Sun May 13, 2007 10:37 PM UTC
We are travelling down to a villa in St Germain de Lusignan (nr Jonzac) at the end of August and arrive in France a day before the Villa booking begins, so I was planning on splitting up the drive and stopping half (ish) way down...??

With limited knowledge of France and how we are going to get to the Villa etc etc (only booked it about an hour ago!) - I looked at a map and thought Nantes might be a nice place to stop to break up the drive?

We are a family with two adults and 3 kids (2, 3 & 8) - would Nantes be a suitable place to stop or should I look for a smaller place where we could stay out of town for a night?

Also, as there are 5 of us and we all need to get in one hotel room - does anyone have any experience of where we can stay?? (not too expensive!)

Thanks in advance!

If you are taking the Portsmouth-Cherbourg ferry Nantes is a good enough halfway point. We have taken the route you will be following many times but now prefer not to stay in Nantes centre (where a relative lived until recently) as negotiating the traffic system from the ring road can take up some time. Last year we stayed in a Logis at Héric. It is only just off the N137 but is set in lovely gardens with a swimming pool which might be nice after a long, hot drive. We had a little double chalet in the grounds but I think there were larger options available - there were quite a few children about.
I would recommend Logis as 1st option for any overnight stops anyway. www.logis-de-france.fr
Budget chains like Campanile and Ibis are OK and easy on the budget but I'm not sure about Family rooms being available. There are very cheap chains like formule 13 we looked at one once but felt it was too, too basic .

For route planning we use viamichelin.com. You should receive precise instructions about finding your villa from the owner/agency.

It is a lovely area for a family holiday.
