| Luderitz | Worth seeing Luderitz if time short? Posted: Mon August 18, 2003 07:29 PM UTC
My girlfriend and I will be spending about 2 weeks in Namibia in November, mainly the south as we;ve seen Etosha and Damaraland. So, Windhoek - Fish R. - Namib Desert - Swak - Windhoek.
Is it worth the big detour to Luderitz and Kolmanskop, at the expense of time in Swak or the Namib? |

Luderitz is interesting and worth a visit, but you can do and see everything in a day or two. The history of the place (and nearby Kolmanskop) is really interesting, but these days many of the old buildings in town are looking a little shabby. It's worth a drive out to some of the beach areas to the south of the city if you have a 4x4. The drive to Luderitz from Aus is beautiful and you may see the wild horses in the desert. From Luderitz back up to Swakopmund is pretty barren. You can take the back roads and drive forever through neverending (but gorgeous) desert, or head back to the main highway through Keetmanshoop.
