Province of Newfoundland and Labrador Ferries Labrador/NFLD
Posted: Thu May 10, 2007 04:37 PM UTC
Hello,
Our family ( 2 adults, 1 teenage and 2 11 yrs olds ) is taking a trip up through Quebec and into Labrador. We will then be taking a ferry from Goose Bay to Cartwright(departs 5pm , travel through the night, arrives 6am, 11 hours ), driving from Carwright to Blanc Sablon, then taking a Ferry from Blanc Sablon to St. Barbe, NFLD ( all within 21 hours !!!) We have never traveled on a ferry and would like advice on this type of travel. What is a dormitory berth? What kind of accomidations should we get as a family?

Ferry travel is not too bad..... but!! Be careful where your berth is located. If it's on an outside wall below water level, it can be pretty scary. Especially for the 11-year-olds. As adults you may be able to tolerate the noise, etc., but it's not nice.

Dormitory usually means bunks. You may be able to get a cabin that will hold all of you -- a double lower, with a single upper, and then two single bunks. Bath facilities are OK, rather tight in lower priced berths. If you know the name of the company, you can probably go On-line and view the cabin decks to get an idea of layout.

The higher up, and outside, the more sway: while central just above water level you don't get that much sway... but you don't get windows either, if you're the least bit claustrophobic.

Check out the company, and ask for pix of sample berths. They should have them on-line, in brochures, etc.

I'd try for adjoining rooms, or a largish suite that would hold you all. Otherwise, I'd separate the adults, so kids weren't on their own.
