Dear Friends,
I am 51 years old, planning to have a trip to leh via manali-leh road and coming back via Leh-jummu kashmir road by my own Santro car along with my wife and a 13 year old son. Would anybody be kind enough to give me the necessary tips for this journey so as I may remember him/her for whole of my life.

I dont think it is advisable to go in a santro car on that road. You need a vehicle with higher ground clearance, like Scorpion, Bolero or Tata range.

This is the itinerary i had chalked out for my bike ride around leh. You can edit it as per your places of interest.
Also buy a india road atlas, eicher makes one for around 400 available at any good book store.

May 28th (250kms) Delhi – Chandi
May 28th (300kms) Chandi – Manali
May 28th – 31st Manali (Rest)
June 1st (150kms) Manali – Saarchu
June 2nd – 3rd (200kms) Saarchu – Leh
June 4th – 5th Leh
June 6th (50kms) Leh – Khardung
June 7th (60kms) Khardung – Panamik (Ki Gompa)
June 8th (130kms) Panamik – Darbuk
June 9th Shyok – Tsultak
June 10th (120kms) Darbuk – Chusul
June 11th (120kms) Chusul – Chumatang
June 12th (150kms) Chumatang – Mahe – Leh
June 13th Leh
June 14 – 15 (140kms) Leh – Padum
June 16th (180kms) Padum – Karsha
June 17th Karsha - Rungdum
June 17th Rungdum - Kargil
June 18th (200kms) Kargil – Shrinagar
June 20th (891kms) Shrinagar – Delhi
June 22 –23 Delhi

As such Santro will not be a problem.
Take the Santro only if it is in good shape and new tyres
and most importantly, how good a Mountain driver are you.

Driving to leh is little less than a car rally,
and definitly not a car excursion.
