Has anyone stayed at this hostel lately? I'm thinking about staying there for a few days in June and I've read mixed reviews. Many of the positive ones are written by people who only posted about this hostel (no other tips) so it seems a bit fishy... Is it clean? noisy? fun? Any input will be appreciated!

I've lived in Victoria for years, and if I had to stay in a hostel in this city I would DEFINITELY, without a doubt, stay in the Hosteling International hostel. I wouldn't even consider staying at the Ocean Island. It's quite close to the needle exchange, which isn't a terrible thing but it's not great if you're going to be coming back late at night. I've also heard RUMOURS of insect problems from people at other downtown businessses (apparently the owners of the hostel approached other businesses asking for a recommendation for an exterminator... but none of the other businesses had bug problems).

Thanks for your reply - the HI hostel was our first choice but we were too late to get a private room. But after reading your comments we've decided to splurge a bit and we'll stay at a downtown hotel instead :o) Many thanks!
