Please advise on the easiest way to travel to Ali Shan! Do I take train from taipei to chiayi?

take the bus or train,bus is much cheaper to chiayi. From chiayi you need to get another bus to Mt.Ali

Where will you be on the day before you head for Chiayi??

From Chiayi:

Chiayi-Alishan: departs Chiayi at 1:30 p.m. and Alishan at 1:20 p.m. Travel
time, approx. 3 hours and 20 min. Price NT$399 for adults (one-way), return

Chiayi County Bus
Departs Chiayi daily at 7:10, 9:10, 11:10 a.m., and 1:30, 3:30 p.m. and
Alishan daily at 8:30, 9:40 a.m.,and 12:00, 2:00, 4:00 p.m. Travel time,
approx. 2~2.5 hours. Price: NT$200 (one way) for adults. For more information,

I will be reaching CSK on 5th Sep at 5.40pm. Is it wise for me to travel on the same day to Ali shan?

HI,
What you can do is to take the Airport bus to Taichung Statin and then switch to a train and head for CHIAYI. Spend the night there, then head for Alishan the next morning.
