which is the best route? Posted: Sun August 17, 2003 02:38 PM UTC
We live in England and will be in Williamsburg for a few days but will leave on Sunday 31st August (which I know is your labour weekend), we are then driving up to Nyc and we want to know which is the best way to go. Is it straight up the route 95 or would it be better to head back to Newport news/Va Beach area and drive across the Chesapeake Bay Bridge/tunnel and then straight up the route 13 into Philadelphia and then onto Nyc? I dont know if the mileage is must different but a few people keep saying that the route 95 is chockablock and always road works, and also taking into consideration it is a holiday weekend. Any info would be appreciated. I know I have asked a similar question in the forum a couple of weeks ago, but we didnt realise then that this would be the holiday weekend. Thanks in advance. Dianne

On a holiday weekend, you are probably better off using I-95. US 13 is a four lane highway in most places with many traffic lights. It also gets close to resort areas of Chincoteague, Ocean City, and the Delaware Beaches. I-95 is more equipped to handle traffic.

I also agree that you're much better off on I-95, although it's far from being scenic.

Thanks Ellielou, we may just play it by ear on the day depending what time we set off. Di

Hi Dianne,
I agree with Easty, even though 95 will probably be jammed, it will be less crowded than any routes nearer to the beaches. Plus, much less likely to get lost unless you have the time and patience to do so. BTW, where do you plan to leave your car when in NYC? I can give you the address of some not too expensive garages in mid-town.
Sue

Thanks for the advice Sue, as for the parking, we are staying at the Ramada New Yorker and they have valet parking, which we used last year, its about $30 per day, which is expensive, but dont know of any other options. Di
