Montpellier Learning French in Montpellier
Posted: Wed May 2, 2007 06:23 PM UTC
I will be staying in Montpellier in July to learn French would like to visit Carcassonne and Perpignan. Does anyone have any advice on places for theatre or music in the evening (jazz, classical or just laid back local) in Montpellier in particular. Is there much to do in Carcassonne or Perpignan? Is it easy to get around by train?

Merci d'avance pour votre aide.

The Camargue is quite close to Montpellier and very impressive, particularly les trois Saint Maries de Mer. We also visited Avignon from Montpellier and had a great time. I found Carcasonne very touristy

Carcassonne does get a very large number of tourusts and there are soome things that are strictly for the tourists. Despite that, the city is of huge historical importance and is among the most impressive gallo-roman and medieval sites anywhere. I have been to Carcassonne several times over the last 20 years and would never leave it out of a trip to Languedoc.

It has a parallel in the walled city of Aigues Mortes, the first port built by the kingdom of France on the Mediterranean. This is also close to Montpellier, on the edge of the Camargue.

I like all suggestions a lot. You mentioned theatre, it made me think of Pezenas, lovely old town near Montpellier, Beziers, Agde. Buses from Montpellier to Pezenas every hour, I don't know about trains (don't think Pezenas has a train station.)
Pezenas has a famous summer theatre, with lots of animation everywhere. Also many artisans shops to visit, great place for antiques and bric-a-brac. Really a place I wouldn't miss.
