I don't have a definite answer for you but thought that you deserved a serious reply.
There's a Multicultural Festival in Saskatoon that's taken place annually since 1980, and it's city-wide. To me, a non-white person, it would be reassuring that Saskatoon acknowledges many cultures. http://gocanada.about.com/gi/dynamic/offsite.htm?s

Thanks Rixie! That is nice to know. Saskatoon sounds beautiful, we are excited to move there. My husband is black and I am white our daughter is of course both and in some areas of Canada this is still frowned upon believe it or not! I'm sure Saskatoon will not be one of them. Thanks again

Hi Shannan,
Saskatoon is one of my favorite cities...see my VT Travel Pages...and Rixie's mention of Saskatoon's annual Folkfest is a great way to introduce the multiculturalism "Bridge City" offers you and your family. As a former Montrealer and seeing things through Euro-Canadian (caucasian) eyes, I've grown to love this Oasis on the Prairies. The hotel I usually stay at is owned by an Arab, my dental surgeon is a Persian, my neurologist is Pakistani, my lawyer is a Jew, my banker is Ukrainian, my wife's dressmaker is Chinese, her doctor is Polish and our favourite deli is operated by a Filipino lady named Liberty. There's a West Indian restaurant right next door. Not far from Gordie Howe's statue and one of John Diefenbaker downtown, there's a larger-than-life bronze bust of Ghandi. As a great little University town, I think you will find, as the tourist bureau says, "Saskatoon Shines!". Welcome to Saskatchewan, Shannan...and welcome to VT. +Michael

Good job Michael.
It is always rewarding to travel to the prairies. They have the most hospitable people you can find. In my fathers home town the phrase says it all. " New York is big but this is Biggar"

How about sticking to facts for a change! Saskatoon is known MURDER CITY in Canada with the highest rate of convicted murders in Canada. Also it has the highest rate of sexual assault against women in Canada! The rate is 160 SEXUAL ASSAULTS per 100 000 people which makes one of the highest in the world. Compare in USA the rate is 32 per 100k, in Panama it is 10.7 per 100k and in Canada as a whole it is 78 per 100k BUT SASKATOON IT IS 160 PER 100k. It is a racist city where cops have murdered at 3 natives in the last 4 years freeze killing them. Outside Saskatoon the cops murdered (shot) another 2 natives including one (Big Sky) who wearing handcuffs at the time, he had committed no crime. I know of an Indian women who supposedly walk 20 miles across open country then froze to death ---yet when last seen she could not walk across the saloon! She got ride from the cops ! I agree with you that Canada has become a dumping ground for the world's criminals and I'm sure you know some of them. I live near murder city and drive 425 miles to Edmonton to do my shopping when I cannot find what I need in Prince Albert ( where they do not murder natives). I'm not a natives but some of my friends have native ancestry. Want some facts look up the website at www.injusticebusters.com or copy this url http://www.injusticebusters.com/2003/Crime_stats.htm

Hello Michael
I just got a chewing out by a native person said that I had made a mistake in saying that Prince Albert cops did not murder Indians. Leo LaChance was murder by man called Neerland who had close associations with Canada's secret services and another racist organization. But to my knowledge he was not a cop. In Saskatchewan most murders of natives are by other Indians, the result of generations of abuse by governments/religions. There are cultural sites, religious sites but this is a travel site.

There are a lot of people of different races here, but I do have to agree with snogofer on what he has said about the city. Just because there are some different cultures here doesn't mean that the majority of the people are friendly and having lived in and around Saskatoon for the past 20 years the majority of people I have encountered here are rude, arrogant, ignorant, hostile and the list goes on. There is a lot of racial tension in Saskatoon, mostly between people of Native and European descent. There is a lot of stabbings, some shootings, alot of assaults, muggings, rapes, alot of gang activity and the majority of the people here you wouldn't want to approach to say Hi to because of the overall general hostility of the people in Saskatoon. I will say that this does not hold true for every person in this city, but sadly, for the majority it is true. I wouldn't recommend anyone to live here or visit, if you want to see some history of the plains, check out some of the parks or something, there isn't anything here that's worth mentioning. Another thing I will mention is there is pretty much nothing to do here , most of the young people here just go to the bars, cruise 8th street , or go get high . I really wish there was something positive I could say about this hellhole but there isn't. Be Advised.

I just want to let you all know, that I found Saskatoon to be a very friendly city compared to the rest of the WORLD!! Of course it cannot compare to the hospitality of a small town, but cities are always a shocker for those of us who grew up waving to everyone you passed on the road. I never felt threatened or scared on the east side of the city, and only a little on the west side just because of all the rumors I had heard. And if it is true what the others have said about it being "Murder City" (which I don't believe), then what is Regina, "Visit and Die City"?!!?!! Multiculturalism is what Canada is. My friends, who are black, never mentioned any racial tension directed towards them. In fact, I never learned what racial tension is until I moved to Switzerland 3 years ago (result of refugees from war torn countries moving here). Hope you can dismiss alot of what was said by the others, as Saskatoon is a very tolerent and welcoming city. You should have no problems there!
