I read recently on someones China page that when he arrived at the airport the place was swarming with Mossies. Are Mosquitos a problem in this wet/river area, and if so at what time of year? I am coming to China in October.

I remember there were mosquitos in my room from twilight till dawn while accommodating in a guesthouse in Yangshuo (the window-glass was broken ). I had to use mosquito net over my bed . That was about May to June. Just follow precautionary advice avoiding malaria risks including mosquito repellents and medication if necessary.

Don't worry.
Lots of mosquitos in the summer but no problem in October.

We were in Yangshuo in December when I thought it would be really cold and so Mozzies would not be a problem...guess what? In our room big mosquitoes. Take some repellant and ask the hotel to spray each night. Our room had a special mosquito repellant that was put on the power plug but they had not put it on until we asked!!
