Hi, we are planning a trip from Sao Paulo to Manaus in Aug. Is it feasable to rent a car and drive ourselves? Has anyone driven this route and if so, what are the road conditions like? How long would it take to drive there? Thanks

First, buy a map and look at the distances.
Then look at the fares on GOL (www.voegol.com.br) or TAM. Also the buses are quite good. Even inthe more populated parts of Brazil, roads are commonly a series of potholes, most drivers think they are Ayrton Senna, the signs are often not good and the outskirts of many cities have favelas that are not a place you want to stumble into.

Don't even think about that.
Unless you want to do for the adventure not savings.... Even advnuring I would say, drive 1/2 way and then fly. I don't even recommend buses, even first class buses that seats turn into bed. It is not worth it. Also remember Manus in the middle of a jungle....the conditions won't be the greatest. There are too many variables to even start listing here. Bottom line: don't do it.

I agree with the replies above - visitors shouldn't consider driving in Brazil, especially over the vast distances you're talking about.

It´s almost impossible....More than an adventure, an odissey.
If u really want travel by car, travel just inside Sao Paulo State, because there are the bests roads in south america.

If you like to drive,my suggestion is that you drive from São Paulo to Belém do Pará.You'll take some good roads and others not so good, but still transitable.
After Belém take a boat,(They call it boat but are ships)until Manaus. It's a very nice trip. Have a nice stay in Brazil.

Hello,
You can make the drive for sure, but hopefully not to save money!!!! To reach Manaus you can drive either to Porto Velho (going through "Pantanal area") or Belem (going by sea shore, and from there to go either by ship with not too much confort or by plane to Manaus. If you need any help on that, please contact me.
