Hi, we want to drive to Fort Worth when we are over in Austin. can anyone tell me the best route to take, any places worth seeing to stop at en route?

Well, you can see that the fastest route is up I-35 straight into Ft. Worth. Except for the huge amount of traffic on the highway and the seemingly never-ending construction, that should be a breeze ;-)

However, if you are not in a hurry, you can look for wineries near Austin and for nature near Glen Rose and Granbury.

Look at http://www.texaswinetrail.com/index.html and find the map...you will see that there are a number of wineries west of Austin...in addition, this is an attractive (for Texas) area to drive through.

Once you have done with that, drive north through a series of small towns (the "real" Texas) in the direction of Glen Rose. Glen Rose is known for several things:
(1) Comanche Peak nuclear power plant (unfortunately, tours are only during the week by appointment),
(2) Dinosaur State Park where - somewhat unbelievably - you can actually walk in the dinosaur footsteps - take shoes that you don't mind getting wet, since the footprints are in the river bottom - see http://www.tpwd.state.tx.us/spdest/findadest/parks/dinosaur_valley/ ,
(3) Fossil Rim - a very large outdoor preserve that you can drive through with a lot of large, non-native critters,
(4) Big Rocks Park - the rocks really aren't that big, but the cool Paluxy River becomes shallow at this point passing over and through the rocks, and it is a great place to stick your feet in the water on a hot Texas day.

Then drive up to Granbury, which is known for being "cute" as well as becoming housing for lake people and long-distance commuters to Ft. Worth.

There - you now have enough stuff to do for several days ;-)
