| Málaga | One way car rental, Spain to Portugal, which company does it? Posted: Sat April 28, 2007 05:37 AM UTC
Hi! I would like to know which car rental company can have me rent a car from Malaga airport and return it to Lisbon city? Seems like they don't have this one way thing. Thanks for your help!

International car rental companies do let you pick up a car in a country and return it in a different country, however this is an extremely expensive service.
I have just checked the Hertz website and got got a quote of over 1000 euros for a 24 hour rental, picking up the car at Malaga airport and returning it at Lisbon airport the next day. I have also checked the Avis website and although they do offer the service, it is not possible to book online. You need to phone Avis directly on 1-800-230-4898. It will not be cheap either though! Good luck.

This is true, it is expensive, with Avis I got $749 Can for 7 days with drop off fees included. AUtoEurope does it too, but with a $180US charge.
I just called Hertz and the drop off fee ALONE is 650 Euros!!!!! Any espanols out there who rent cars and have good deals! I know no one locally from there would ever pay that price :)

How about 1 week in Malaga, pick up and drop off at the airport, unless it's much cheaper in town to do. Any suggestions?

Dropping a rental car in a different country will always be expensive, regardless of what company you use. Just think about it: if you pick up a car at say Avis Malaga and return it at say Avis Barcelona, the Avis branch in Barcelona will be able to accept the car as their own and rent it on to someone else, no problem. However, if you return the car at say Avis Lisbon, the Avis branch in Lisbon will not be able to take the car as their own because the car is a Spanish car, registered in Spain, with a Spanish license plate. The Avis branch in Lisbon will have no other option but return the car to the Avis branch back in Spain. Just picture this: a member of Avis staff will have to drive the car all the way from Lisbon to Malaga, and then travel back to Lisbon. Now, that is what makes the rental expensive.

I get your reasoning, it is expensive for them too. But last time I was in Malaga, I did the same and they waived the charge because they had a Portuguese car that had to go back from Malaga to Portugal :) So they made 180 Euros off some poor sucker and had me bring the car back :) Maybe now that I know how much of a hassel for them it is perhaps I should book and if they offer to not charge me the 180 I will also ask for more :) Thanks for the explanation. Makes sense!

I have always found that car rental prices in Andalucia to be some of the cheapest in Europe. For a small car - the avergae rental cost including FULL insurance with no Excess - has worked out at around 100 to 140 Euros for one week. Maybe some times more because of the time of year.
Also ONE WAY drop off within Andalucia has not caused me a problem. For example, renting a car in Malaga and returning it in Sevilla. No extra charge. If it was me I would enjoy the competitive rental rates whilst using the vehicle in Andalucia and if going to Seville THEN Portugal, I would want to return the car before enjoying the city. Then I would take the bus over from Seville to Faro. OK it is a bit of a pain but the journey starts from the Plaza des Armas bus terminal which is close to the centre of Seville and finishes at the centre of Faro near the railway station. I would then rent a car from Faro to Lisbon and explore some of the nice country in Portugal.
