| Lugano | What is San Mamete like? Posted: Tue April 24, 2007 11:30 PM UTC
I am considering staying in San Mamete for a week.
I am looking for a beautiful, peaceful place with great food. Would San Mamete be too isolated and remote in your opinion or is it an gem of a place? Thank you. |

Lake Lugano is a beautiful, peaceful place.
San Memete appears to be on the northern end, the best part of the lake.I love Lugano and Gandria is a great village, right next door. It has beautiful restaurants right above the lake. It appears to have ferry boat service, if you are there at the time of year the ferry boats are running you can be in lugano in 3/4 hour. There is at least one boat a day, but from Gandria there are many. This is the link. http://www.lakelugano.ch/d/Orario%20estivo%202007.pdf

Thank you!
I will be coming from Geneva. Would you recommend I just rent a car to get there and keep it throughout my stay? I imagine it would make it easier to get around the area...

Re Car:
When we go to switzerland we buy a swiss pass, the trains, busses, and even the lake steamers are prepaid. Also funiculars and cable cars if there is no other public transport to the place they go. The funicular up Mt. Bre, the mountain you will be under, is not covered by the swiss pass. You could take the train from Geneva to Lugano, the funicular from the train station to the city center for the boat or a bus from the station to San Mamete. Or you could take a cab to the hotel, then use public transport, that's what we do because of the luggage and not wanting to wait. Public transport is so bad in Miami, where we live, and so good in Switzerland that we like to use it as a nice change. You being in italy may affect the bus from your hotel going into switzerland under the swiss pass. You can take the boat to lots of beautiful villages on Lake Lugano. Even to the casino in Campione d'Italia. You have picked a great place.
