| Cadiz | El puerto de Santa Maria Is it a "dump" Posted: Tue April 24, 2007 05:08 PM UTC
Hi
I am considering after vters tips coming to El Puerto in June with husband and son for a few days after Seville. However Ive seen some mixed reviews for El Puerto including one on another website saying its a dump! They then didnt go on to say why. (Were they joking) What do people think? Can it be called pretty? (Im not sure about the view to Cadiz on Puntilla beach that ive seen photos of-is it very industrial?) We are not relly lie on the beach people but our son will like to paddle and play in some sand and we want an interesting town to explore and use as a base. Would we be better going to Conil or even san lucar de barrameda? All opinions please! |

My advice is to contact VTer puerto_lover directly as he has spent a lot of time in this part of Andalucia. Sanlucar de Barrameda is a small but interesting town. I've not been to their beach so can't comment on its quality. Another option may be Rota which I think may have more sites than Sanlucar de Barrameda but then that's all relative. Both are pretty small towns but I believe Rota is more established for tourists. There are a couple of nice hotels, both on the oceanfront, in Rota. Hotel Playa de la Luz is on the outside of town so it's quieter but not close to the sites in town. The Duque de Nareja is right in the historic part of town and is newer. Both are managed by the same company. Service at the Playa when I stayed there was very good.
I hope that helps!

I spent a month taking Spanish lessons in El Puerto a couple of years ago. I liked the place and wouldn't describe it as a dump, but I wouldn't say it is an especially interesting place either - it's just a regular Spanish town, with a pretty church, small castle, a few nice seafood restaurants, but not really a lot of things you could spend time exploring.
I was there in winter, so considered the beach more from the point of view of brisk walks than sunbathing, but as far as I remember Puntilla beach was quite nice - there may be some factories on the horizon but I think they are are on the far side of the bay. I think Sanlucar is a more interesting town, but possibly not as convenient if you are using public transport. El Puerto has the advantage of being on the Jerez-Cadiz train route and also has good ferry connections to Cadiz, so from that point of view it's quite handy.

Thanks for that
we have actually booked a good deal at a hotel in Jerez with a pool but intend to visit both El Puerto and Sanlucar.
