| Santander | Rail from Northern Spain to France Posted: Mon April 23, 2007 08:08 PM UTC
We would like to have a holiday in Santander and then go by rail to France.
From the map I have it appears that there is a rail connection between San Sebastian and Bayonne but I cannot find a site to give me any schedules . Can anyone offer some advice for going into France from the northern coast of Spain ? |

For planning purposes (as opposed to pricing), use the German rail website for such things, because they seem to have done the best in terms of showing routes all over Europe.
Go to www.bahn.de and click on "Internat. Guests" on the upper right to take you to the English pages (with options for French, Italian, and Spanish). Enter "San Sebastian" and "Bayonne" as start and end points. Pick a day in the near future (i.e., less than 60 days out, preferably less than 30) but the same day of the week as you want to go. You'll see about 4 trips daily (not at really convenient times :-( ), each of which changes trains in Hendaye. But it will get you started... BTW the Spanish rail website (not terribly useful for international travel) is www.renfe.es and the French rail website is www.sncf-voyages.com - happy hunting! Bill

The train to the French border from Santander is not very convenient .
The bus is a better solution you may see in www.alsa.es You may go to the French border and there take the train to Bayonne or you can do all the travel by bus , it takes only 4hours and a half Buen Viaje!!!!!

I really am most gratefull for this . Now we can begin in ernest. Internet line speeds are very slow where we live ( Zimbabwe ) so it is quite a mission to search for information.
Once again thanks for your guidance. Peter

It i most kind to give us this information. Our destination will be Bordeaux , so perhaps we can get from Bayonne to Bord. without too much trouble.
